Periwinkle: a new natural host of Lettuce chlorosis virus in China.

Abstract

In July 2016, virus-like symptoms of interveinal yellowing, leaf curl, and plant dwarfing were observed on 12 periwinkle plants (Catharanthus roseus cv. Apricot Delight) in Chongqing, China. A sample of total RNAs was prepared from one symptomatic plant using Trizol RNA isolation reagent and sent for Illumina NextSeq sequencing. Based on the results of RNA sequencing, PCR assays and nucleotide sequence comparisons, the causal agent was identified as Lettuce chlorosis virus (LCV). This is thought to be the first report of the natural occurrence of LCV on periwinkle. Periwinkle plants could serve as a reservoir for LCV and eventually to infect other ornamentals and cultivated crops.
