Parabemisia myricae (Kuwana 1927) is an East Palearctic whitefly species. The common name Japanese bayberry whitefly is often applied. It is native to Japan and alien to Europe. P. myricae has become a pest in several different parts of the world and is widely distributed across the Mediterranean Basin, where avocado and citrus are the major hosts. It is extremely polyphagous insect recorded from woody dicotyledonous hosts from 14 families. This whitefly species was first found in Croatia in September 2015 on lemon and ornamental tree Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent, in low population in Lumbarda (N42°55′20.9″ E17°10′16.8″) on the island of Korčula. Species P. myricae was identified on the basis of morphological characteristics of puparium/pupal case, using the classical microscopic identification method. In the field, the puparium is broadly suboval and flatten, white to yellowish, with a translucent wax fringe that borders the body. On slide, the pupal case has an outer submargin with a row of 14 pairs, including caudal pair of evenly spaced and even-sized setae. Vasiform orifice is triangular to elongate-cordate with operculum occupying its basal half and elongated lingula with characteristic two blunt laterobasal lobes and two long setae. Favourable climatic conditions, biodiversity and appropriate plant hosts were the parameters for the screening pest risk analysis upon which can be predicted that whitefly P. myricae will spread in Mediterranean part of Croatia in the future and therefore it represents a potential phytosanitary risk for citrus production.
