Abstract

In June 2015, five banana cv. Williams plants showing symptoms including streaks on the pseudostem and upright bunchy appearance, were submitted to the laboratory for virus identification. The plants originated from a farm close to Hibberdene in the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast production region (South Africa). The causlal pathogen was identified as Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) based on serological and molecular analyses. This is thought to be the first report of BBTV on Musa spp. from South Africa.
