During 2 visits in February and May 2014 to palmito (Bactris gasipaes) farms in the province of Santo Domingo de los Ts√°chilas in western Ecuador, scattered plants with bud rot symptoms were observed. The affected plants showed chlorotic spear leaves with necrosis inside the base of the stem on the meristematic tissue. The causal pathogen was identified as Phytophthora palmivora based on morphological, genetic (ITS) and pathogenicity analyses. This is thought to be the first report in Ecuador of P. palmivora causing bud rot in palmito.
