B. somnulentella leaf mines can easily be detected and the strands of silk with frass beneath the mines confirm the identity of B. somnulentella.

Prevention and control

No attempts to control B. somnulentella are recorded.


B. somnulentella is a minor pest of sweet potato (Ipomea batatas), and can be a problem in newly planted crops (Wood, 1976). Unless infestations are unusually severe the development of tubers is not affected.

It is also a potential agent for the biological control of bindweed (Awadallah et al., 1976; Rosenthal, 1985).
