Vietnam has transformed itself from one of the world’s poorest countries into a ‘middle income’ nation: in 1993 58 percent of the population was living in poverty, and by 2008 this figure was less than 15 percent.
Together with Vietnam’s Southern Horticultural Research Institute (SOFRI), Plantwise launched the first plant clinic at SOFRI’s headquarters in My Tho, Tien Giang province in 2007. Today, hundreds of farmers receive advice and information on plant health at the permanent clinics in Ben Tre and Tien Giang in the south and Hung Yen and Vinh Phuc in the north, as well as mobile clinics that bring the service to more remote communities. Farmers’ queries cover a range of fruit crops, vegetables and flowers, including citrus, durian and leaf onion.
