One of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, Nicaragua’s economy is centred on agriculture – yet despite its fertile land the country is unable to feed itself and imports are high. Previous efforts to increase crop production have involved a high use of pesticides, leading to degraded environments and health issues.

Since 2005 Plantwise has been working to help Nicaragua feed itself, healthily and at a lower cost. We currently support 16 plant clinics in two regions, Occidente and Las Segovias, which operate once a week in public spaces. Farmers bring samples of diseased plants for diagnosis – most commonly banana, beans, peanuts, sesame and tomatoes – and the plant doctors recommend alternative treatments to pesticides. To reach more people, mobile plant clinics are being run alongside the regular clinics.
