Chilli Thrips

  • Crop rotation/intercrop with Agathi (Sesbania grandiflora) to act as a barrier for pests.
  • Avoid chilli cropping after sorghum or following onion. Also avoid mixed cropping with sorghum and sugarcane.
  • Intercrop chilli with tomato. Tomato crop is recommended as a trap crop with chilli since it is not prone to thrips.
  • Planting of resistant varieties, such as Pant C1, Pant C2, Dh-7-6-6, Jwala, Musalwadi, K-3435 and IC 24343.
  • Monitor for upward curling of leaf margins and mottling appearance.
  • Severe damage is leaf distortion, defoliation, stunting, flower drop and dwarfing of plant
  • Place blue sticky traps @10 no's per acre.
  • Consider direct control actions when 3 nymphs or adults are found per infested leaf.
  • Foliar application of 5% NSKE (Neem Seed Kernal Extract) at a rate of 1 litre per acre.
  • Foliar application of Pongamia oil 1.6 litre/acre (foiliar means as spraying on leaves).
  • Foliar application of Neem oil at a rate of 2 litres per acre (foiliar means as spraying on leaves).
  • Foliar sprays with 300 ml tobacco decoction and 350 ml fish oil resin soap per acre.
  • Release of predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii at a rate of 25-100 mites per m².
  • Avoid resurgence causing pesticides.
  • Seed treatment with Imidacloprid at a rate of 10 g/kg of seeds. Seedling dips with Imidacloprid 17.8 SL (Trade Name: Confidor, Atom,Imida Gold) at a rate of 1.2 ml/litre of water.
  • WHO Class II (moderately hazardous).
  • Foliar application of Imidacloprid 17.8 %SL (Trade Name: eg. Confidor, Atom,Imida Gold) at a rate of 70 ml/acre.
  • WHO Class II (moderately hazardous).
  • Foliar application of Thiamethoxam 25 %WG (Trade Name: Actara, Click, Evident) at a rate of 50 g/acre.
  • Thiamethoxam is not listed in the WHO guide lines.
  • Foliar application of Abamectin 1.8% EC (Trade Name: ABC, Vertimee, Abamectin) at a rate of 100 ml/acre.
  • Abamectin is not listed in the WHO guide lines.
  • Foliar application of Buprofezin 10 %EC (Trade Name: Banzo, Blunt,Buplon, Appland) at a rate of 250 ml/acre.
  • WHO Class III (slightly hazardous).
