Busseola fusca Kapuchi
Malawi
  • Rotate with non host crops e.g. legumes
  • Plant with first rains to avoid high incidence of the pest
  • Feed stalks to livestock or make compost with maize stalks or bury infested crop residues at least 30 cm deep by deep ploughing
  • Use trap crops such as sorghum or pearl millet or use the push-pull technology (plant desmodium between maize, and vetivar/napier grass outside) - factsheet available
  • Observe an area-wide closed season for at least 2 months
  • Place sand or soil in the funnel of the plant in hot spots, and in winter crop at the stage of forming internodes
  • Immediately after emergence, start monitoring and continue at weekly intervals until maize reaches physiological maturity
  • Check for holes on unfolding leaves, larvae and frass in and on the leaf sheaths
  • Check for dead heart (death of the growing point) among young maize plants
  • Consider control if you see one or two infested plants
  • Apply 4 - 5 g of neem powder in the funnel of each plant. The neem powder composes of neem seed powder mixed with dry clay or saw dust at a rate of 1:1.

  • WHO Class II - Moderately Hazardous.
  • Spray with Carbaryl 850 WP dissolved at 12.5g / 10 l of water. Spray into plant funnels. Observe a re-entry interval of 1 day and a pre-harvest period of 2 days.
  • WHO Class II - Moderately Hazardous. Do not go into the field after spraying until after 4 days
  • Spray Lambda cyhalothrin 5 EC diluted at 1 ml/5l of water. Spray into plant funnels. Observe a 1-day re-entry period and a 7-day pre-harvest period.
  • WHO Class II - Moderately Hazardous.
  • Spray Deltamethrin (Decis 25 EC diluted at 1ml/l of water). Spray into plant funnels. Observe a 12-hour re-entry period and a 5-day pre-harvest period.
