Direct seeding of rice

Recognize the problem

Conventional rice sowing is difficult and yield is reduced because of:
  • a shortage of irrigation water
  • not enough labour at the time of transplanting
  • not maintaining the recommended plant population (80,000 plants/acre)
  • electricity shortage and high fuel prices

Background

Direct seeding is becoming popular among farmers because:
  • it is cheaper and quicker
  • it offers better control of grown weeds with more advanced herbicides
  • it is an environmentally friendly technique
  • the quality of rice stays the same

Management

  • Recommended seed rate is 12 kilograms per acre
  • Before planting, soak  and treat the seed for a day in a solution of thiophanate methyl 70% wettable powder (e.g. Topsin M) at a rate of 30 grams for 12 kilograms, available from local agrochemical dealers
  • Broadcast the seed to watter (optimum moisture) soil conditions
  • Irrigate seven days after sowing, and again at saturated conditions. There’s no need to stand the water in the field, just wet the land.
  • Spray a weedicide, e.g. bispyribac sodium 20 wp (e.g. Clover) at 80 grams per 100 litres of water (available from local agrochemical dealer). Spray using a recommended T-Jet weedicide nozzle (no space should be left without spray)
  • Irrigate the field 24 hours after spraying with weedicides
  • Use recommended protective measures during the pesticides application (for example gloves, goggles, gum boots, masks) and avoid spraying against the wind or while smoking or eating

When using a pesticide, always wear protective clothing and follow the instructions on the product label, such as dosage, timing of application, and pre-harvest interval.
