Leaves  -  wilting
Leaves  -  yellowed or dead
Roots  -  cortex with lesions

Symptoms
On basal stems, brown to dark-brown lesions appear on the surface, extending to the phloem and xylem and resulting in soft rot. In cases of severe attack, whole plants may wilt and die.

On roots, sunken necrotic brown lesions appear in the cortex.
Prevention and control
Resistant Cultivars

The use of resistant cultivars is the most important means of control. Yellow-fruited passionfruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) are highly resistant, whereas the purple-fruited (P. edulis f. edulis) are susceptible (Zheng and Huang, 1997).

Cultural Practices

Protect against wounds made by insects or machinery to prevent disease spread to healthy plants. Disease severity can be reduced by protecting the plant against moisture stress (Zheng and Huang, 1997).

Impact
Base rot is one of the most important diseases of passionfruit. In Fujian, China, losses have been reported at around 10%, but can reach >80% in farms where susceptible varieties are grown (Zheng and Huang, 1997). In south-eastern Queensland, Australia, the disease caused severe economic losses before 1950. As a result of recurring epidemics, the culture of passionfruit has ceased in this region (McKnight, 1951).
